Gestures of Abundance: vaga

What forms of knowledge remain at the margins of established circuits? How are they transmitted when they do not fit within the school, the textbook, or the archive? This station invites us to think of pedagogy as an aesthetic and political practice, where learning and teaching merge with gestures of resistance, fabulation, and collective imagination.

Bypassing hierarchies, knowledge circulates as embodied experience: told stories, repeated rituals, shared gestures. School is no longer a building but an expanded space — in the forest, on the seabed, in the square, in the body. These are peripheral and subterranean transmissions: knowledges that spread, passed from hand to hand, body to body, intertwining like threads in a common loom. At vaga, the Biennial opens a field of listening and transmission that challenges disciplinary boundaries and reactivates insurgent pedagogies. Learning emerges as an act of imagination, attention, and dissidence.

Works on Display

Cian Dayrit
Tree of Life in the State of Decay and Rebirth (2019)
Dayrit’s work reflects his interest in the gesture of mapping. The tree charts the interconnected issues stemming from imperialism, feudalism, and capitalism, outlining the struggles of the Global Majority. Dense embroidery and insurgent symbolism compose a landscape of resistance and regeneration — where abundance manifests in care, struggle, and cultural rootedness.

Catarina Gonçalves
Resisto Resisto Resisto (2025)
Bringing together different generations and cultures living in the Azores, the film follows a transdisciplinary journey around the triad of self–body–space. Using art as a civic act, it reclaims the right to occupy public space and shape shared futures. The workshops and programs were conceived as part of Transmalhar, an art-based learning project by Anda&Fala, which took place over the course of 2023 and 2024.

Resolve Collective (New Commission)
The Gallivantation of the Promise
Resolve presents an installation accompanied by workshops that explore “wandering” as a method of knowledge and counter-cartography. Through intuitive and communal gestures, they imagine ephemeral scenographies, diasporic vocations, and ways of inhabiting territory with humor, precision, and relational radicality. With this main installation at vaga, the work has several satellite installations in São Miguel.

Meg Stuart & Pacap 8 (New Commission)
Sulphur Edges (2025)
The film is a choreographic encounter shaped with and through place. Created during the PACAP 8/Mystery School residency, which brought together an international group of performing artists who were encouraged to embrace unknowing, disorientation, and collective improvisation as entry points for transformation. It unfolds in the thermal sites of São Miguel, where performers embrace elemental forces and the environment, between silence and tremor, containment and release.

Sónia Vaz Borges & Filipa César
Mangrove School (2022)
The film reflects on the schools built within the mangroves of Guinea-Bissau during the anti-colonial struggle. Memory, ecology, and insurgent pedagogy intertwine in a poetic portrait of resistance, where the territory itself becomes classroom and refuge.

Sónia Vaz Borges & Mónica de Miranda
Weaving Stories (2024)
Interlaces narratives of resistance and female transmission in postcolonial contexts. The act of weaving emerges as both a political and a spiritual gesture, revealing knowledge that flows between the intimate and the collective, between historical time and the mythical.
