Catarina Gonçalves

Catarina Gonçalves’s work reflects ideas of sacrifice, possession and ownership of the body. Born in the Azores, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Sound and Image by the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University of Porto and is a Master of Arts in Documentary Film Directing by the DOC NOMADS Erasmus Mundus.

Her first documentary short film “Mãos de Prata / Hands of Silver” (2020) won a prize in the Prémios Sophia Estudante and in the Concordia Film Festival. Then, her second documentary short film, “Até que tenha Fôlego / Until I Can Breathe” (2023), won the Best Director award at the Curtas de Vila do Conde Film Festival. And her latest documentary short film, “Dans un Souffle / In a Whisper” (2025) won the Grand Jury Award at Sheffield DocFest.
