Ana Vieira was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1940. She grew up on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal. Lived and worked in Lisbon, Portugal. She died in Lisbon, in 2016.

Her work developed mainly from the 1960s onward, exploring the boundaries between private and public space, inside and outside, the visible and the hidden. Using materials such as translucent fabrics, everyday objects, and installations, Vieira questioned the perception of inhabited space and the social and feminine condition. She is regarded as a singular figure in Portuguese contemporary art, for the poetic and critical way in which she addressed themes of intimacy, invisibility, and identity.
