Walk&Talk Biennial is an art and gathering initiative that takes place every two years on the island of São Miguel, Azores, proposing an ongoing reflection on the territory, its imaginaries and its transformations. Rooted in newly commissioned works and collaborative processes, it weaves together exhibitions, performances, walks, gatherings, and public activities involving artists, curators, specialists, and local communities.
With a participatory, ecological, and transdisciplinary approach, the Biennial asserts itself as a space for research, advocacy, and encounter, shaped by a network of regional and international agents. As its name suggests, it is a biennial in motion — travelling across the island and unfolding in various places and formats. More than an exhibition event, it is a living structure that rehearses ways of being and doing in common.
(2011—2022)
Created in 2011, Walk&Talk established itself over the course of twelve editions as an arts festival, continually adapting its format to create a space for experimentation and dialog. Through annual residencies, installations, performances and public programs, the festival developed an active relationship between contemporary artistic creation and the geographical, cultural and social context of the Azores. Over these twelve years, Walk&Talk welcomed more than 500 artists, curators and creators from different fields and backgrounds, who engaged with the insular territory through site-specific practices and participatory processes. Its programming progressively expanded to various fields, affirming Walk&Talk as a space for encounter, risk and exchange, and positioning the Azores on the international contemporary art circuit.
In 2023, Walk&Talk began its transition from annual festival to a biennial, with the aim of deepening its involvement with the territory and its communities, and investing in the development of longer-lasting artistic projects. This process, which culminates in the first biennial edition in 2025, gave rise to the Journey to the Biennial — an interim program that runs in the years in which the biennial is not held. The Journey to the Biennial creates the context and conditions for the preparation of each edition, through residencies, meetings, assemblies, workshops and other activities that involve local and international teams. These initiatives make it possible to test ideas, build relationships and anticipate themes and methodologies, affirming Walk&Talk as a living structure, in permanent dialog with its place and time.
