LOTA, by Nadia Belerique, in Athens
Developed during an artist residency in the Azores as part of the 2025 Biennial, LOTA by Portuguese-Canadian artist Nadia Belerique is now presented in a solo exhibition of the same name, curated by Anaïs Castro, at opbo studio in Piraeus, Athens.
Filmed inside the sustainable fish auction house in Ponta Delgada, the video and sculptural installation observes the rhythms and repeated gestures of everyday labour, following the circulation of tuna and the mechanical movements of the space. Amid fluorescent light, water, ice, and metal surfaces, the work reflects on the cycles of extraction, consumption, and transformation that shape both human economies and ecosystems.
The exhibition also brings together a series of sculptural works composed of domestic objects balanced on towers of canned fish, bringing maritime infrastructure and domestic spaces into proximity while revealing the relationships between circulation, labour, and consumption.
Presented in a former industrial space near the Port of Athens, LOTA enters into dialogue with the material and economic systems that shape the circulation of goods, bodies, and images.
The exhibition is on view until 11 July 2026.
